MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Town of Mount Pleasant is proud to announce the receipt of $3.3 million in State funding thanks to the support and efforts of Senator Chip Campsen and the South Carolina Legislature. These funds will be instrumental in implementing two major, community-enhancing Capital Improvement Projects.
A portion of the funds, $1 million, will be utilized for the Shem Creek Sustainability project. Specifically, the money will allow for dredging in the area near the Town-owned public docks and the working shrimp docks ensuring public access and economic support of the shrimping and fishing fleet. The remaining $2.3 million of State-allocated funds was approved for the design and construction of future phases of the Mathis Ferry Road portion of Mount Pleasant Way.
Mount Pleasant Way is a town-wide multi-modal path included in the Comprehensive Plan passed in 2020. It will provide increased opportunities for recreation as well as alternative transportation. Existing sections are located on Park West Boulevard, Vaughn Ed Kee Parkway, Wingo Way, and other areas of Town. Throughout the past few years, the Town has been actively working on the design of Mount Pleasant Way for Mathis Ferry Road. Around $750,000 of Charleston County Greenbelt half-cent sales tax funds have been approved for the acquisition of rights of way to improve the existing sidewalks on Mathis Ferry Road. By law, Greenbelt funds cannot be used for eminent domain. In addition, the Town has annually set aside funds within the Capital Improvement Plan to pay for the design and construction of the path. The $2.3 million that Senator Campsen assisted in securing will be further used to support the construction of the path.
“We are deeply grateful for Senator Campsen’s efforts to secure these funds for the Town of Mount Pleasant,” said Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie. “The funding will allow us to move forward with the projects that will benefit our community for years to come.”
